Data from the governing body of football revealed that 1,222,839 spectators had entered the stadium after 48 games.

Comparing those results to 48 matches in France four years ago, there has been a 29% increase.
The knockout stage of this World Cup, which starts on Saturday, typically draws slightly over 25,000 spectators.
Although there have been instances of sold-out audiences, Australia has often seen higher attendance levels than New Zealand.

Fewer than 7,000 people attended Japan's 2-0 victory over Costa Rica in Dunedin, New Zealand, and many seats were vacant.

The competition has now sold more than 1,715,000 tickets, exceeding the 1.3 million initial goal.

"I'm confident that by the final, we will have more than 1.9 million fans having walked through the stadium gates," Sarai Bareman, head of FIFA women's football, told AFP.

"The tournament has been incredible so far, it has greatly surpassed our expectations," she continued.

Despite certain games having TV paywalls, she claimed that broadcast numbers worldwide have also been "overwhelmingly positive".

The Netherlands vs. United States match was the highest viewed Women's World Cup group stage match in American history.

Bareman blamed the growth in women's football, which has resulted in the gap between the top teams closing and games becoming more competitive, for the increase in interest.

Olympic champions Canada, Brazil, Italy, and Germany, who finished second in the European Championship last year, were all eliminated during the group stage.

Instead, South Africa, Jamaica, Morocco, and Nigeria all made advancement.
