APC issues a warning as the Assembly gets a letter dissolved Kano emirates
A group known as Yan Dangwalen Jihar Kano, or the Kano Electorate, has written to the Kano State House of Assembly requesting a review of the statute passed by the former governor Abdullahi Ganduje's government that established four new emirates: Gaya, Rano, Karaye, and Bichi.
The organization demanded that Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, the former Emir of Kano, be restored to his position.
The group's request follows former governor Rabiu Kwankwaso's repeated remarks that Ganduje's actions on the Kano emirate might be reviewed by the ruling New Nigeria People's Party in Kano.
However, in an interview with The PUNCH on Wednesday, the All Progressives Congress cautioned against making any changes to the current emirates arrangement, which Ganduje established, citing concerns that it would disturb the tranquility of the historic city.
The opposition group cautioned the NNPP governor, Abba Yusuf, not to allow himself to be pressured into doing anything that might jeopardize the state's current peaceful cohabitation.
A copy of the letter sent to the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly on February 5, 2024 was sent to The PUNCH on Wednesday by Yan Dangwalen Jihar Kano.
"The dissolution of the emirates and the Emir of Kano will foster unity, peace, and stability within Kano State and its neighboring communities," the group wrote in the letter, which was also copied to the governor, deputy governor, and secretary to the state government of Kano.
"We are writing to beg, as well as to bring the honorable members' attention to the law governing the additional emirs in Kano State. We specifically want the new emirs and the section that resulted in the formation of the four more emirates to be reviewed and possibly dissolved.
"We firmly believe that the people of Kano will experience greater togetherness and progress as a result of the emirates being combined into a single entity. For the benefit of all residents, this consolidation might help to improve community cohesion and expedite government.
"We recognize the Kano State House of Assembly's legitimate jurisdiction on the matter of emirate management. We do, however, respectfully ask your distinguished Assembly to review and reevaluate the choice to depose HRH Sanusi Lamido Sanusi. We firmly believe that his reinstatement will promote harmony, tranquility, and stability in Kano State and the surrounding areas.
It would be in the best interests of Kano as a whole, according to the group, even though Sanusi was described as "a highly respected and influential figure who has demonstrated his commitment to the well-being of the people of Kano State throughout his tenure as Emir."
He put forth great effort while in government to advance Kano State's residents' social and economic advancement, as well as their access to healthcare, education, and higher living conditions.
The removal of HRH Sanusi Lamido Sanusi from his throne has led to discord and turmoil among Kano State residents, unnecessarily escalating tensions within the community.
We respectfully implore the distinguished Assembly members to give careful thought to this issue in the best interests of Kano State's development and unity. Your careful contemplation on this matter will surely have a long-term effect on our community's future.
