Wike and Fubara pick up their Rivers supremacy fight again.

Wike, during his administration, sought to install a loyal successor, which he found in Fubara, despite the wishes of many party bigwigs and faithful in the state. The party stalwarts, including former governor Celestine Omehia, deputy governor Tele Ikuru, former Minister of Transport Dr Abiye Sekibo, former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Chief Austin Opara, and Senator Lee Maeba, were all involved in the disagreement that led to the election of Fubara as the party's standard-bearer.

Even before Fubara was declared winner of the primary, some aspirants, including Dr Sekibo, walked out of the Dr Obi Wali International Conference Centre, where Fubara was elected as the party's standard-bearer. This disagreement led to the fallout of the disagreement, with Dr Sekibo, Senator Maeba, and Chief Opara, along with Sir Omehia and other chieftains, turning their backs on Wike.

The aggrieved party stalwarts also opposed the group of five governors, known as the G-5, led by Wike, who rejected the Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate and former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, as political permutations gathered momentum for the poll. While Wike saw them as state enemies for aligning with Atiku, one of them, former senator Maeba, voiced his concerns bluntly, saying that they should come together and support the emerging candidate.

Fubara won the election by a landslide and was sworn in as governor in a well-attended ceremony held at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium, Elekahia, in Port Harcourt, on May 29, 2023. Within the first three to four months of the new administration, things went smoothly between Wike and his godson, Fubara.

Wike and Fubara, former governors of Nigeria, were seen as falling apart due to their disagreements and the appointment of four commissioners - Works, Education, Attorney-General/Justice, and Finance - by their successor. This led to a lack of communication and collaboration between the two leaders, with the former governor ensuring that these commissioners were reappointed and assigned the same portfolios.

Fubara, however, was criticized for his high-handedness and expressed concern over this trend. He sought fresh air by relating his troubles to top politicians, including known political foes of his predecessor, and attended PDP stakeholders' meetings outside the state. This led to moves to unseat the governor by the state House of Assembly, led by Wike's kinsman, Martin Amaewhule.

Wike, who was already the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, accused Fubara of changing the leadership of the state legislature and installing one loyal to him in an effort to build his political structure as a sitting state chief executive. However, an explosion rocked the state House of Assembly on October 30, 2023, destroying the hallowed chamber. The 27 lawmakers, under heavy security, announced a notice of impeachment against the governor, demanding to know the sin he committed to warrant the plan.

Despite the chaos, Governor Fubara supervised the demolition of the Assembly complex on December 13, 2023, which has since been under lock and key. This political drama has left Wike and Fubara struggling to maintain their relationship and maintain their political power.
