Despite the withdrawal of subsidies, border fuel smuggling continues, says the head of customs.

Adewale Adeniyi, the acting comptroller general of the Nigeria Customs Service, promised a harsh crackdown on oil thieves on Monday, stating categorically that the country cannot "afford to let saboteurs take over our economy." Adeniyi claimed that despite the elimination of the subsidy on the good, there were still instances of fuel smuggling at Nigeria's border posts. He added that the agency has changed its border patrol tactics in an effort to catch oil thieves.
