Ex-Nigerian model sentenced to prison for raping an Irish college student
Utseoritselaju Uwatse, a former Nigerian model, was sentenced to four years in prison by a Central Criminal Court jury, led by Justice Paul Burns, for raping a fellow college student in Ireland.
Uwatse, of Avonmore Road, Raheen, Limerick, was found guilty of one count of rape in March 2023 for the April 20, 2018 offence, according to the IRISH Mirror on Monday.
On the day of the incident, a group of college students gathered for drinks in Cratloe Student Village before heading into Limerick city for a night out, according to Detective Garda McGrath.
McGrath stated that one of the group's members was the victim, who testified that the group proceeded to Smyth's pub and subsequently to Molloy's late bar in Limerick, where she met Uwatse, whom she knew socially.
CCTV evidence shown in court showed Uwatse and the victim hugging one other that night.
During the trial, it was stated that Uwatse picked up the victim and brought her into a bedroom, where she remembers him removing her shoes before falling asleep. The next morning, she awoke early, and her garments didn't feel right with the convict beside her.
Uwatse then inquired as to if she "was on pill?" This question struck her as peculiar, and he subsequently revealed that they had intercourse and the condom had broken. She grew upset when she realized she hadn't agreed to it.
