In Nigeria, there is no higher religion— CAN, NSCIA
The Nigeria Inter-Religious Council maintained the country's secularism on Friday, saying no faith is superior to another. While reaffirming Nigeria as a multi-religious state under God, the organization urged religious leaders to oppose political misuse of religion, which could lead to anarchy.
The submissions were made in a joint statement by Daniel Okoh, President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, and Alhaji Muhammed Sa'ad Abubakar, President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs.
The NIREC co-chairmen expressed concern about the negative trend caused by hate speeches before and after the 2023 elections.
According to the statement, "weaponizing religion for selfish, political gain has the potential to cause religious conflict in Nigeria." As a result, NIREC strongly rejects statements that give the idea that one religion is superior to another. Nigeria, according to NIREC, is a multi-religious state under God.
"NIREC strongly condemns statements that portray religious dominance and superiority in the country." We would prefer that every Nigerian be a sincere Christian or Muslim, as this would encourage religious ideals that may improve the country. Given that the majority of Nigerian politicians practice one of the two religions, Christian and Muslim politicians should preach the fear and love of God by caring for the common good and welfare of the public.
"NIREC urges religious leaders to stand up to political manipulation of religion, which could lead to anarchy." We oppose politicians' shenanigans, whose main purpose is to further their political interests by whatever means imaginable, including using religion as a cloak. NIREC urges our political leaders to use their platforms to advocate for peace, unity, and harmony, while also refraining from making statements or comments that could aggravate the nation's already tense political climate.
"NIREC calls on all politicians to play politics with God's fear, dignity, honor, and decorum, avoiding division and sectionalism." The NIREC asks to the general public to remember that the elections are concluded and that several challenges are being heard in court challenging the decision; consequently, the judiciary must be given the opportunity to do its job.
"Nigerians must remain patriotic, law-abiding, and peace-loving, and must oppose all acts of machination and manipulation by leaders who use religion to divide the country." Let us pray for a country that will continue to promote justice and peace. Every citizen is responsible for developing a thriving Nigeria. God bless Nigeria's Federal Republic!"
