Ivan Toney received an eight-month suspension for breaking the gambling laws.

Ivan Toney, a striker for Brentford and England, was given an eight-month suspension from the sport and fined 50,000 pounds ($62,500) for breaking 232 of the Football Association's (FA) betting regulations, the English governing body announced.

The body announced on Wednesday that Toney has been suspended with "immediate effect" and will not be permitted to play for club or country until his suspension expires on January 16, 2024. Additionally, the 27-year-old was warned about his future behavior.

The FA reported that between 25 February 2017 and 23 January 2021, the Brentford attacker was accused of 262 violations of FA Rule E8. "The FA subsequently withdrew 30 of these breaches, and he admitted to the remaining 232."

An impartial regulatory commission issued the penalties following a formal hearing. Starting on September 17, 2023, Toney can resume training for the remaining four months of his suspension. In a statement, Brentford said: "Brentford FC notes the independent Regulatory Commission's decision to immediately impose an eight-month suspension on Ivan Toney from participating in any football-related activity.

“Ivan was charged with breaches of FA rule E8 and had a personal hearing earlier this week.

"Brentford FC is waiting for the independent Regulatory Commission's written reasons to be published. Before deciding on the next course of action, we shall review them.

Toney has scored 20 Premier League goals this season, which places him third overall behind Harry Kane of Tottenham and Erling Haaland of Manchester City. He earned his England debut against Ukraine in a European Championship qualifying match in March.

His absence will be a major setback for the side, as his goals were crucial to their ascent to ninth position in the Premier League going into the season's final two games.
