OAU final-year student "beaten to death for stealing"
Okolie Arinze, a final-year student at Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, was allegedly killed by a mob after being accused of stealing a phone.
The terrible occurrence reportedly happened on Monday at the institution's Awolowo Hall of Residence.
According to reports, the deceased was a Part 5 student in the Department of Civil Engineering. Mr. Abiodun Olanrewaju, the institution's public relations officer, acknowledged the occurrence.
He mentioned how the administration of the university had denounced the action and formed a panel to look into it.
The act that resulted in the death of a Part 5 student at Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, Osun State, has been strongly denounced by the university's management.
According to preliminary findings of the investigation, the student was killed by a mob after being accused of stealing a phone.
“Saddened by this ugly development which he described as unfortunate, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Bamire, has set up a committee to unravel the circumstances that led to this incident,” Olanrewaju stated.
Confirming the incident as well, the Students’ Union President, Olayiwola Festus, described the action as inhumane and pledged justice.
“I regret to announce the death of a Part 5 student assaulted in a mob action at Awo Hall yesterday (Monday). The student was declared dead on arrival at the Emergency Medicine Department of OAU Teaching Hospital this afternoon,” the union leader said in a statement.
He stated that people suspected of being involved in the deceased man's assault were being detained and investigated in preparation for follow-up legal procedures.
He continued, "Our union opposes mob action and justice must be done in this instance.
The university management expressed sympathy to the bereaved parents, faculty, staff, and students, and prayed that God would give them the strength to endure this irreparable loss.
