Pope Francis expresses willingness to sanction same-sex unions.
This revelation follows the Vatican's 2021 ruling, which stated that the Church would not celebrate gay marriages because God "cannot bless sin."
The Vatican released a letter from Pope Francis to a group of cardinals seeking clarification on this matter late Monday. In his letter, Pope Francis emphasized the significance of "pastoral charity," urging priests not to simply reject or shun persons.
He emphasized that blessings, particularly in morally difficult situations, are prayers for God's help in living a better life.
Pope Francis recognized the Church's unambiguous position on marriage as an exclusive, stable, and irreversible union between a man and a woman, capable of procreation.
Other forms of union, he claims, exist but do not fully correspond with this concept. Despite his words, Pope Francis underlined that the Church's essential principles must be maintained.
He argued that decisions for blessings should be made with pastoral prudence, taking into account individual circumstances.
While he advocated for kindness, patience, and understanding, he also stated that not all pastoral decisions should become hard and fast rules.
This declaration comes after Pope Francis' 2020 endorsement of same-sex civil unions, in which he called LGBT Catholics "children of God."
