Ranking the best English clubs in last 15 years
The head coach of Chelsea, Mauricio Pochettino, declared that he would be joining "the greatest team in England" for the past 15 years.
But after winning the Triple Crown last season, Manchester City has surpassed the Blues as the most successful team throughout that time span in terms of trophies. Mauricio Pochettino asserted in his first interview as Chelsea manager that Chelsea was the most successful team in the previous 15 years, infuriating supporters of his former club Tottenham.
Pochettino's assessment of arch rival Chelsea as England's "greatest team" during the previous 15 years sparked accusations of "disrespect" from Spurs supporters.
Tottenham was led to the 2019 Champions League final by the 51-year-old Argentine.
But shortly after, in front of stunned spectators, chairman Daniel Levy fired him, admittedly after his five-year rule had produced no victories.
1. MAN CITY - 17 TROPHIES
Last month, Pep Guardiola's City defeated Inter Milan to win the Champions League for the first time ever.
And that also guaranteed their place in history by confirming that they had won the Treble and the distinction of being England's most successful club during the previous 15 years.
They utilized Arsenal's misfortune to win the Premier League, their ninth in 15 years, and defeated Manchester United in the FA Cup Final.
They had won the trophy three times since 2008, the most recent being their victory over the Red Devils at Wembley.
And when you include their six League Cup triumphs, they have now won trophies 17 times in the past 15 years.
2. CHELSEA - 14 TROPHIES
They now lead Chelsea, who have won an astonishing 14 trophies throughout the same period, by three awards.
The Blues have won the championship three times, one more than any other English team during that time period, in addition to their two Champions League triumphs and four FA Cups.
Along with winning the Club World Cup and Europa League twice, they also won the League Cup and Uefa Super Cup.
Now they have won 14 titles in 15 years.
3. MAN UTD - 12 TROPHIES
With their total, Chelsea has two more than third-placed Manchester United.
During Sir Alex Ferguson's last seasons, the Red Devils won four championships, the most recent in 2013, in addition to the Champions League and Club World Cup.
In addition, United has won the League Cup four times, the Europa League once, and the FA Cup once each, bringing their total number of victories since 2008 to 12.
Even if they are having a harder time winning awards since Fergie left, they are still miles ahead of Liverpool, their closest opponent.
4. LIVERPOOL - 7 TROPHIES
Since 2008, the Reds have won the Premier League, Champions League, Club World Cup, Uefa Super Cup, FA Cup, and two League Cup championships, giving them a total of seven titles.
5. ARSENAL - 4 TROPHIES
Thanks to their four FA Cup victories, Arsenal are now in second place, and Mikel Arteta is eager to add to that total this upcoming season.
6. TOTTENHAM - 0 TROPHIES
And Tottenham, Pochettino's old team, are still seeking to break their trophy drought.
They won the League Cup in 2008, but they haven't had a victory since. Their current manager, Ange Postecoglou, is tasked with turning things around.
