Roman Abramovich went silent for four days, then I was sacked - Avram Grant

After Jose Mourinho left the Blues, he was named the team's interim manager two months later.

In the Premier League, Chelsea pushed Manchester United all the way but fell short by only two points.

Then, for Grant and his side, things remained largely the same in Europe.

In the Moscow Champions League final, they played the Red Devils, and the game ended in penalties.

John Terry fell and missed his penalty kick, which would have given him the chance to win the Champions League.

Man Utd won the European championship for a third time despite Nicolas Anelka missing the crucial penalty.

Grant said that Abramovich didn't speak to him for four days following the final.

When they finally spoke, the Israeli manager was informed that his tenure as manager was coming to an end and that he would return to his position as director of football.

Grant, though, decided he didn't want to take on that role again and quit the club.

Regarding the 2007–2008 season, he said on "Fever Pitch: The Battle for the Premier League" — which is only available on Paramount+ — "We came second place (in the league), but I remember I think in my first or second (press conference), I said that my target is to be first in Champions League final.

"We now had the chance to lead the world in excellence.

"I recall when [Manchester United]'s team, which included [Wayne] Rooney, [Cristiano] Ronaldo, and [Carlos] Tevez, arrived at our facility. Then he switched the team, which made the first 15 minutes a bit confused.

"We made internal changes after 20 minutes, and we absolutely took control of the game after that.

"We performed significantly better than they did. Even Alex Ferguson, I believe, is aware of that. Penalties are the next topic, though.

Oh well, I suppose this was John Terry's best season, so it was tragic. He had a fantastic season, playing.

"[Roman] Abramovich didn't call me [after the final]," he said. We went three to four days without speaking. We need to get ready for the season, the following season, he remarked as he summoned me to his home.

"Okay, I say. He then informed me that I would be keeping my position as director of football. Okay, then. And I resigned after declining the position of football director.

"I was unhappy because I believed we were on the verge of becoming the finest in the world. We had been so near. But he is in charge. My pal, he. We must be mindful of that.

"I didn't agree with this, but I'll always appreciate that he gave me the opportunity," the speaker said.

Grant managed teams including Ghana, West Ham, Partizan Belgrade, and Portsmouth after leaving Chelsea.

He now serves as the Zambian national team's head coach.
