Sudan: Egypt imposes "stringent" border crossing requirements on Nigeria
For stranded Nigerians to cross Egypt's border, Nigeria has been given strict requirements.
At the Egyptian border with Sudan's war-torn nation, the first group of 637 Nigerian students who were evacuated from that nation are trapped.
Geoffrey Onyeama, the minister of foreign affairs for Nigeria, stated in a statement on Sunday that three days after the students arrived, Egypt's border with Sudan was still closed to them.
According to Onyeama, the Egyptian officials insisted on screening each of the 637 Nigerians before allowing them admission.
He clarified that if Egypt delayed any longer, the Federal Government might send the students to Port Sudan for evacuation.
In the meantime, the approval to be granted for the evacuation of Nigerians through Egypt comes with strict conditions and guidelines, including: "Details and schedule of the aircraft; capacity of the aircraft; a strong pledge that once our citizens depart the border, they will be conveyed directly to the designated airport." This message was sent by Nigeria's ambassador to Egypt, Nura Rimi, and was seen by our correspondent on Monday.
The presence of Nigerian government authorities at the sites of embarkation, a complete list of the evacuees with passport numbers, valid travel papers (passports or ETC), and standby buses that would take them right away to the airport are additional requirements.
