Tinubu to address Nigerians today
At 7 p.m. on Monday (today), President Bola Tinubu will address Nigerians. Dele Alake, Special Advisor to the President on Strategy, Communication, and Special Duties, made the announcement in a statement that was made public on Monday morning.
On Monday, July 31, 2023, at 7 p.m., "President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will make a broadcast to the nation.
"Television, radio stations, and other electronic media outlets are enjoined to hook up to the network services of the Nigerian Television Authority and Radio Nigeria for the broadcast," stated the announcement. The elimination of the subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit, more commonly known as gasoline, and its subsequent impact on Nigerians' cost of living may not be unrelated to the broadcast.
Following Tinubu's remark that "Subsidy is gone" at his inauguration on May 29, 2023, Nigerians "lost their peace of mind," according to the Nigeria Labour Congress, last week.
The labour congress criticized the Tinubu administration for its "unfriendly" policies and said that the administration had continued to treat Nigerians like slaves in a statement issued in Abuja and jointly signed by its National President, Joe Ajaero, and Secretary-General, Emmanuel Ugboaja.
It was reported earlier today that the NLC has started a massive mobilization in preparation for its planned nationwide strike, which is set to start on Wednesday in protest of the suffering caused by the elimination of the fuel subsidy.
In a timetable that our Abuja-based correspondent was able to obtain on Sunday, the NLC encouraged Nigerians to "join us at the Unity Fountain, Abuja on Wednesday, August 2, 2023, at 7 am."
There is no country in the world where the government completely abandons its people to the whims of the market without any oversight or protection. Instead of subjecting everyday folks to unwarranted suffering and misery, the Federal Government should take swift and decisive action to address the criminal substance of subsidies.
The NLC stated that fixing all of our refineries was necessary "as a matter of national importance" in order to meet domestic fuel consumption.
