Akeredolu claims that rejecting outdated notes is disobedience to the law.
Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, the governor of Ondo State, referred to the rejection of old naira notes as flagrant disobedience to the law on Thursday.
This was revealed by the governor in a nationwide broadcast.
He bemoaned the state's numerous traders and business owners' rejection of outdated naira notes.
According to him, the country's economy would suffer from the rejection of the old notes, which would also have a negative impact on local trade and business dealings.
According to reports, the Supreme Court mandated that the country's previous currency notes must continue to be accepted as lawful tender for the exchange of goods and services.
"It is therefore of great concern to me today that a significant portion of our people in the state, especially traders in our markets, taxi and bus drivers, barbers, auto mechanics, and artisans, are rejecting the old naira notes, causing and sustaining needless suffering on their fellow citizens and customers.
Hence, I want to let you know that it won't help us at all if we refuse to accept the old 1,000, 500, and 200 naira notes. It will restrict local trade and commercial dealings, undermine our economy, and bring about serious harm and avoidable problems for us," he stated.
He urged commercial banks to spread out all available currencies and come up with a better solution to reduce congestion inside the banks.
He asked state citizens to welcome and accept both the old and new notes in accordance with the law.
"I would like to take this occasion to appeal to the good people of Ondo state to embrace and accept both the old and new notes in accordance with the law. Let's avoid escalating the conflict unnecessarily. Please gather, use, and exchange old notes freely and without restriction.
