The White House stated that Democrat Biden's speech will also "honour the legacy" of late Arizona senator John McCain, a moderate Republican stalwart who shared Trump's dislike.

With surveys showing them neck and neck, the 80-year-old Biden has recently increased his attacks on Republican frontrunner Trump, accusing him of attempting to "destroy" democracy.

Trump, the populist tycoon, is facing criminal charges for attempting to sabotage the 2020 election, which his supporters attempted to reverse by attacking the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

McCain despised Trump, withdrew his support for him in the 2016 presidential election and stating before his death from brain cancer in 2018 that he did not want Trump to attend his burial. Trump mocked his war hero status in 2015, and the feeling was mutual.

In contrast, Biden delivered a eulogy at McCain's funeral, claiming that he "loved" McCain and that their relationship transcended political disagreements.

The US election is still more than a year away, but Biden and Trump have engaged in their first big head-to-head battles of the campaign this week.

The pair paid separate visits to autoworkers in Michigan, with Biden standing on a picket line on Tuesday and Trump speaking to employees on Wednesday.

Biden then embarked on a series of campaign appearances, which he used to renew his assault on Trump on the question of democracy.
"Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans are determined to destroy American democracy because they want to break down institutional structures," he said late Wednesday at a reception in California.

Biden's speech comes a day after Republican contenders debated in California without Trump, who has maintained he is so far ahead in the polls that he doesn't need to show up.
