In a daring and tragic interview, DELE ALLI disclosed that he developed a sleeping drug addiction after his horrific stay in Turkey.
After moving back to England, Alli, 27, went on a downward trajectory that included binge drinking and sleeping medications.
He also checked himself into a rehab center in an effort to get himself back on the right path.
He revealed: "Now is the right time for me to tell people what's been going on" during an interview on The Overlap with Gary Neville.
It's difficult to discuss because I've kept it a secret for a very long time.I'm afraid to discuss it.
"I was in a horrible place mentally when I returned from Turkey and discovered that I required a surgery. I made the decision to go to a contemporary rehab clinic for mental health.
"They battle with trauma and addiction. I thought my time had come. You cannot be ordered to go there; you must be informed and decide for yourself if you want it to be successful. "I was stuck in a destructive cycle and things that were harming me."
Everton completely backed Alli's choice to enter rehab and provided him with additional assistance during the trying time.
"Everton was amazing and supported me, and I will be grateful to them forever," he stated.I couldn't have asked for anything more from them while I was making the biggest decision of my life—doing something I was afraid to do—than for them to be so honest and sympathetic. I'm glad I finished it.
Over the past three years, Alli's once bright career has been on the decline.
And he acknowledges that during his dip, at the age of 24, he considered retiring.
The ex-Tottenham player recalled: "I woke up one morning and had to go to training."I can still picture myself in the mirror, asking if I could retire right then. At 24. I'm working on what I love. That broke my heart, for me.
"I've always been up against myself in everything," he continued.
"I was winning the battle and looking content. However, I was struggling internally.
The talk was described as "the most emotional, difficult yet inspirational conversation I've ever had in my life" in a tweet by Overlap presenter Neville.
Soccer fans got to learn more about Alli's personality off the field in the Tottenham documentary 2020 All or Nothing on Amazon.
The former MK Dons star, though, was not pleased with the way the filmmakers portrayed him.
"I'm glad you asked about that [Jose Mourinho calling me lazy], " he responded.
"So that lazy remark that everyone loves to bring up, that interview was plainly on Amazon.
"He called me lazy – that was the day after recovery day.
"A week later, he apologised to me for calling me lazy because he'd seen me actually train and play.
"However, that wasn't in the documentary, and nobody brought it up because it was just him and I.
"He called me lazy in the team meeting, but he later apologized to me one-on-one, I believe on the field.
And I didn't give it any thought at the time since I am not lazy, which I am aware of.
One of the first senior Everton players to return to preseason practice last week was Alli.
However, manager Sean Dyche recently steadfastly declined to comment on the midfielder's future following his transfer to Goodison Park.
Alli, he replied, "is not here. He will be out for a while due to his injuries.
They are aware of what they should and shouldn't be doing in some of the reported incidents.
"As a manager, you cannot have complete control over your employees' lives."Do we need to follow them all day long? All you can do is lead them.
It will take a few weeks to heal his damage, which will take some time.
