EPL: Southampton gets relegated to the Championship after losing to Fulham
The 2-0 loss to Fulham on Saturday, which put an end to Southampton's miserable season and left them stuck to the bottom of the standings, resulted in their relegation from the Premier League.
Southampton lost at St. Mary's due to goals from Carlos Vinicius and Aleksandar Mitrovic in the second half.
With two games remaining, Ruben Selles' team was officially relegated to the Championship after going 11 games without a victory.
For the first time in 11 years, the Saints will move back up to the second division. After taking over for the fired Nathan Jones in February, Southampton spent the majority of the season in the bottom three, and Selles was powerless to prevent them from going down.
Ralph Hasenhuttl, who was fired in November after four years in command, was replaced by Jones following just 14 games.
Southampton, which placed a dismal 15th in each of the previous two seasons and was humiliated 9-0 by Manchester United in February 2021, had warning flags for a time. This season's first side to be demoted from the Premier League is Southampton. Rishi Sunak, the British Prime Minister and a well-known Southampton supporter, was present at St. Mary's to witness the final rituals of Southampton's arduous season.
With only two home league victories this season, it was evident that many Southampton supporters had already accepted their fate before Saturday based on the vast amounts of empty red seats in various stadium sections.
Fulham was in complete control at this point, and more vacant areas appeared as fans left before the final whistle put Southampton to rest.
As news of Southampton's relegation to the Championship broke, boos and cries of "you're not fit to wear the shirt" erupted from the crowd, who were considering traveling to Millwall, Plymouth, and Rotherham rather than Anfield, Old Trafford, and the Etihad Stadium.
It has been on its way. We were aware that we were in a precarious situation, according to Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse.
"We need to evaluate if we did everything we could, both individually and as a club. We haven't, which is unfortunate, in my opinion.Has judgment been sound? Have we exhausted all options on a pitch? We ought to perform at a higher level than we have, in my opinion.
