FG and labor will meet today to discuss post-subsidy negotiations.
On Monday, September 18, 2023 (today), the Federal Government and the leadership of the Nigerian Labour Congress will meet to discuss the impending industrial action.
Olajide Oshundun, the Ministry of Labour and Employment's Director of Information, revealed the meeting between the two parties in a statement on Sunday.
It stated, "The Nigerian Labour Congress has been invited once more for a meeting with the Minister of Labour and Employment, Simon Lalong, on its planned indefinite strike.
"The minister said it was crucial that the unions meet with the government to resolve all outstanding issues in order to prevent further economic disruption. He directed the Department of Trade Union Services and Industrial Relations to schedule a meeting with the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress for Monday, September 18, 2023.
The Minister said that in order to ensure industrial harmony, which is essential to achieving the Renewed Hope Agenda, President Bola Tinubu's administration "will always engage organized labor and respond to its concerns after due consultation and negotiations." A source revealed that the congress would be present at the NLC's meeting with the federal government on Monday.
The source stated, "We will be present tomorrow to hear what the Federal Government will say."
According to reports, the Federal Government's most recent invitation came days after the NLC called off its two-day warning strike. The NLC had turned down an earlier opportunity to meet with the Federal Government in order to go on strike in protest of the country's growing hardship and suffering as a result of the removal of fuel subsidies.
The NLC threatened a total and permanent shutdown of the economy within 14 working days or 21 days after the warning strike if the government did not take action to address the hardship being experienced throughout the nation. The NLC had given notice of a two-day warning strike to protest the excruciating mass suffering and impoverishment experienced throughout the country.
