While their parents had guests over and left them unattended, a three-year-old girl in Houston, Texas, inadvertently shot and killed her sister, age 4, after discovering a loaded semi-automatic weapon in their apartment.

On Sunday, March 12, around 8 o'clock in the evening, there was an unintentional gunshot in the family's home.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez reportedly told Mail Online that one parent believed the other was babysitting the two daughters when they were left alone in an apartment bedroom.

In the apartment on Bammel North Houston Road, there were five other adults—family members and friends—including the parents of the girls.

According to the sheriff, it is thought that the three-year-old found a loaded semi-automatic gun and shot once, hitting her sister, who is four years old.

Once the single shot was fired, the parents sprinted into the bedroom where they discovered the four-year-old was unresponsive.

They put the gun away and dialed 911 to contact the emergency services. At the site, the toddler's death was confirmed.
"It just seems like another unfortunate incident of, again, a kid getting hold of a gun and hurting someone else, and this time there was a fatal shot," Sheriff Gonzalez said.

Our hearts are torn apart. Gonzalez stated, "Our deputies are fairly disturbed up. Support staff will be on the site to help the officers and family members.

He stated that the incident was another unnecessary gun tragedy and said, "The community is impacted when a youngster loses their life in this way.

"We keep emphasizing how easily this can be avoided.

You must ensure that you are a responsible gun owner by keeping your guns locked away in a secure location. More needs to be done than just warning young children not to handle weapons.

"You know, we need to exert a little more effort. We saw far too many sad events play out like way.

Based on the police investigation, which is still in its formative stages, the Harris County District Attorney's Office will determine whether any of the adults will be charged, according to Gonzalez.
According to Mail Online, the advocacy group Everytown for Gun Safety examined shooting data from 2023 and discovered that there had been at least 58 unintentional kid shootings in the US, leading to 22 fatalities and 37 injuries.

According to the organisation, there were at least 353 unintentional gunshots by children in 2022, which led to 156 fatalities and 212 injuries.
