Why ASUU will continue to strike – President

The Nigerian Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has been met with opposition from the ASUU, a union representing private universities in the country. The president of ASUU, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, expressed his opposition to the fund's plans to include private universities as beneficiary institutions of its projects. He urged the fund to focus on monitoring its projects and abolition of the "stakeholders fund" to ensure quality education. The Executive Secretary of TETFund, Sonny Echono, stated that the interactive session was a proactive engagement against the prevailing challenges in the sub-sector and aimed to sustain steady growth and development of tertiary education. Echono also emphasized the need to engage and challenge each other on how to improve the situation. The session also aimed to address industrial disputes in the tertiary education sector and build cooperation and collaboration between the fund, beneficiary institutions, and unions on matters affecting the growth and development of tertiary education in Nigeria. Former President of Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Ayuba Wabba, commended the fund for its commitment to elevating university education and experience for lecturers, non-academic workers, and the student population. Wabba noted that the NLC has greatly benefitted from the ideological clarity and consistency of unions in tertiary institutions.
