In Ogun, an enraged customer attempts to set fire to a bank.
On Tuesday, a man named Sodirudeen Rufai was detained for attempting to set fire to the Guaranty Trust Bank facility in Abeokuta's Oke-Ilewo Area, Ogun State.
PUNCH According to Metro, the suspect claimed he chose to raze the bank because his repeated complaints that an illegal N500,000 was debited from his account went unanswered.
When our reporter reported the incident, he was urged by the Area Commander, Metro, Abeokuta, to allow the bank to follow its procedure in unraveling the reasons around the deduction.
However, PUNCH Metro learned that the situation deteriorated after the bank informed him that he had been duped.
Our correspondent learned from the bank official who attended to him that Rufai was claimed to have returned to the bank with petrol and began to sprinkle it on the banking hall.
During the drama, several customers fled for safety, while others, along with bank security personnel, dragged Rufai to the ground before he could use the lighter in his hand.PUNCH According to Metro, the suspect was handed over to the Ibara Police Division by the bank's Chief Security Officer, Godwin James.
Meanwhile, the suspect was believed to have claimed during interrogation that he conducted the action to draw the attention of the appropriate authorities to what the bank done with his money.
The state police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, told our correspondent on Wednesday that Rufai would be prosecuted with attempted suicide and murder.
"He was fighting a noble cause in an ignoble way," Odutola added. He has the right to file a complaint about his money going missing. But he went about it in the wrong way. We're going to charge him with attempting to commit suicide by murder because if he succeeded, he'd have murdered himself and everyone else in the bank."
