JUST IN: fire destroys shops in Kano market.
The upper building of the former Savannah Bank in Singer Market in Kano was destroyed by a fire event on Monday, according to the Kano State Fire Service.
Saminu Abdullahi, the Fire Service's public relations officer, revealed the fire began about 2:18 a.m. in a statement.
"We received a distress call at 2:18am from a man named Sai'du Hamza informing us that a market in the state's Fagge Local Government District had caught fire.
In order to put out the fire and prevent it from spreading to other nearby establishments, he said, "as soon as we received the information, we deployed several of our people and fire fighting trucks to the scene of the incident around 2:22am.
However, Abdullahi said that a number of temporary stores were completely destroyed by the fire, adding that the fire service had yet to determine the exact number of impacted establishments and the origin of the fire.
