Lagos closes the Alaba market due to serious environmental sanitation violations.
The Lagos State Government sealed up the famed Alaba Market in the state's Ojo district on Monday. This comes exactly a week after the Mile 12 market reopened on Monday.
Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, stated that the Mile 12 market was reopened following a thorough inspection that covered several aspects of environmental compliance, waste management procedures, and general cleanliness within the market.
He stated that issues vital to the environment, public health, and safety were not negotiable, and that the government would not stand by helplessly as those principles were undermined and destroyed by the actions of a few.
"We cannot continue to take our environment for granted. We must change our unfavorable attitude toward the environment.
"How we treat the environment determines how the environment treats us." We cannot fold our arms and let the indifference of a few influence the generality of the people.
Wahab stated on his X official Twitter, "Alaba International Market, Ojo has been sealed up for poor waste disposal practices, failure to pay their waste bills, and gross environmental sanitation offences."
