Hackers attack Manchester police, steal officers’ personal details
As a result of the alleged theft of the warrant card information for thousands of officers, the Greater Manchester Police came under cyberattack on Wednesday.
According to Daily Mail UK, the breach is said to have targeted a contractor company that makes the force's warrant cars.
On Wednesday, officers and workers were made aware of the data breach.
The assault comes after a nearly identical cyberattack last month against the Metropolitan Police.
GMP Assistant Chief Constable Colin McFarlane released a statement in response to the incident that read, "We are aware of a ransomware attack affecting a third-party supplier to numerous UK organizations, including GMP, which retains some information on persons employed by GMP. It is currently considered that this data does not contain financial information.
We have called the Information Commissioner Office and are doing everything we can to make sure that employees are kept updated, their questions are answered, and they feel supported while we try to determine any impact on GMP because we recognize how worrying this is for our employees.
"A criminal investigation into the attack is being conducted on a national level, and this is being treated extremely seriously."
