Ogun Police rescue abducted journalist in Lagos
A journalist named Oduneye Olusegun was abducted by armed gunmen in the Mobalufon neighborhood of Ijebu Ode. Ogun State Police Command agents have since freed him.
The journalist was taken hostage on Thursday and freed three days later in Lagos.
This information was released in a statement on Monday by SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, the State Police Public Relations Officer.
The next morning, according to Oyeyemi, the kidnappers used his phone to call the victim's wife and wanted N30 million in ransom.
According to the statement, "after the report, Commissioner of Police Frank Mba directed SP Murphy Salami of the DPO Obalende divisional headquarters, under whose jurisdiction the event occurred, to secure the victim's safe rescue.
"In accordance with the CP's order, the DPO assembled his detectives and started an in-depth, technical examination of the occurrence.
Their efforts were successful when the victim's Toyota Camry was located in the Idimu neighborhood of Lagos, where the kidnappers were holed up waiting for the ransom.
As the hoodlums saw the police officers, they opened fire on them, engaging them in a shootout that lasted for nearly 45 minutes before the hoodlums fled from the automobile after suffering varied degrees of bullet wounds.
"The victim's car was covered in the kidnappers' blood due to gunshot wounds the police squad received.
The kidnappers had no choice but to leave the victim alone after realizing that the game was over, and he was retrieved unharmed.
Nonetheless, according to the PPRO, Police Commissioner Frank Mba praised his soldiers for their professionalism and bravery.
He urged members of the public, in particular hospitals and traditional healers, to call the police if they observe anyone suffering from a gunshot wound in their neighborhood.
The Command is prepared to bring the fight to the criminals' doorstep, hence the CP also issued a warning to them to avoid the Ogun State.
