Diego Leon Osorio, a former football player who represented Colombia in the 1990s, has been detained three times for drug trafficking, according to the police on Friday.

On April 8, the ex-left-back tried to fly to Madrid, Spain from a nearby airport "with 1,849 grams of cocaine hydrochloride," according to a press release from the police.Before making the arrest, airport officers found the cocaine in four pairs of footwear.

Police did not make the arrest public until Friday, when a press-leaked footage of Osorio in handcuffs next to a uniformed cop was released. Osorio won league titles with the Colombian team Atletico Nacional.

The 52-year-old was previously detained in Miami in 2002 while delivering cocaine, but he was freed on bail.

He was detained once more in Medellin in 2016 and later placed under house arrest.

In the 1990s, Osorio competed for Colombia's national squad alongside Rene Higuita and Carlos "El Pibe" Valderrama. He succeeded at the club level for Atletico Nacional, taking home two Colombian league titles as well as the Merconorte Cup in 1998.

In Colombia, the top producer of the white powder in the world, soccer and narcotics have been interwoven for forty years, with some players detained for connections to trafficking.

Jhon Viafara, a midfielder for the Once Caldas squad that won the Copa Libertadores in 2004, is another Colombian international who was deported to the US for his involvement in a narcotics shipment to that nation.
