The EFCC needs to transform the "Yahoo Boys" into IT professionals.
Mr. Chidiebere Ihediwa, a cyber-security expert, has recommended that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission come up with strategies for reorienting educated internet fraudsters (also known as Yahoo Boys) who have been jailed and turned into information technology specialists.
This approach, in his opinion, is preferable to letting them rot in jail or experience catastrophic disintegration.
Ihediwa, a well-known software developer as well, made the announcement on Wednesday at the Police Officers Mess, GRA Ikeja, Lagos, at an award ceremony in his honor.
Ihediwa asserts that knowledge is divided into two categories: positive and negative.
"Even though the cyber fraudsters included many educated young men, their innate knowledge was at variance with the ideal positive knowledge needed for societal development," he clarified.
"Re-directing the knowledge of the Yahoo boys to meaningful ventures will be of great advantage to the nation," the cybersecurity professional noted.
Ihediwa merited the honor, according to Mr. Chris Oji, a representative of the award host (Cornerstone.ng), given his exceptional contributions to software development and information technology in Nigeria, he stated in his welcome speech.
Godwin Obaseki, the governor of Edo State, recently revealed intentions to teach reformed online scammers, popularly known as "yahoo boys," in modern information and communication technology and other practical skills in his proposed technology park. Obaseki plans ict training for repentant Yahoo boys, according to Punchng.com.
