ANTONIO CONTE admitted he may be sacked
After a humiliating Champions League loss, Antonio Conte thinks Tottenham 'might remove him even before the end of the season.'
The Italian's listless Tottenham Hotspur exited Europe on Wednesday evening after a goalless stalemate with AC Milan in North London, losing the tie 1-0 on aggregate.
Antonio Conte, 53, who is out of contract in the summer, expressed uncertainty about his future after suffering his third defeat in a row.
"My contract expires in June," he told Italian television.
"We'll see – they might fire me before the season's end, who knows, maybe they're disappointed."
The setback to Milan came after 1-0 losses to Sheffield United and Wolves in the FA Cup and Premier League, respectively.
And Conte is concerned by his team's inability to penetrate opponents in the final third, despite the fact that they were down to ten men late on after Cristian Romero received a second yellow card.
"It's the third game in a row that we haven't scored," he continued.
The game was hanging in the balance. Offensively, I believe we can perform much better. I refer to the entire team, not just those who play in the front half. We can do a lot better.
"I can't say anything negative about the players' dedication. They provided everything from beginning to end. We finished the game with a total of ten men. Yet if I had to pick a bright spot, it would be that we took a step ahead.
"We played in the European Conference League last year and weren't able to progress out of the group stages. We've made progress, but it's not enough; if we want to compete, we'll have to fight."
Tottenham currently sits fourth in the Premier League table, but if Liverpool, Newcastle, and Brighton win their games in hand, they might overtake them.
More than their league place, most Spurs fans are dissatisfied with their team's style of play.
After the Milan defeat, Conte was compelled to apologize to the fans.
"I'm genuinely sorry for the supporters, but we can't invent the win," he remarked.
"It's critical to understand this and not expect for a miracle that a trophy would appear one day. We must construct while remaining patient."
