Edo deputy gov halts move to impeach him
Phillip Shuaibu, the deputy governor of Edo State, has petitioned the Federal High Court in Abuja to halt the start of the impeachment proceedings against him.
The Inspector General of Police, the State Security Service, the Governor of Edo State, the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, and the Chief Judge of Edo State are the first, second, third, fourth, and fifth defendants, respectively, in the lawsuit with the file number FHC/ABJ/CS/1027/2023.
In order to prevent the third, fourth, and fifth defendants/respondents or their representatives from starting an impeachment procedure against him, Shauib is requesting an interlocutory injunction.
Additionally, he asked the court to enjoin the state's governor or any other person operating under his command from harassing him and obstructing his ability to perform his duties as the state's deputy governor.
The reliefs included, in part, "An order of interlocutory injunction restraining the third Defendant/Respondent whether by himself or his agents or persons acting for and on his behalf from harassing, intimidating, embarrassing and preventing the Plaintiff/Applicant from performing the duties of his office as deputy governor of Edo State, including attending the State Executive Council Meetings/Functions and other obligations about his office pending the hearing and determinate
Shaibu, however, has filed a motion on notice and a motion exparte for the same remedy.
He filed an interim injunction on the motion exparte and an interlocutory injunction on the motion on notice.
In the past, there had reportedly been a conflict between Governor Godwin Obaseki and his deputy, but Shaibu had repeatedly denied it.
