Following Chelsea's unprecedented buying spree, THE Premier League is ready to make a significant rule change.

With yesterday's acquisition of Moises Caicedo from Brighton, the club broke its own record for the most money spent on a British player transfer.

That exceeded the £107 million Chelsea paid Benfica in January to get Enzo Fernandez.

Ecuadorian Caicedo agreed to a 12-month extension after the initial eight-year deal ended in 2031.

Another 21 Chelsea players have made West London their home for more than five years.

By spreading the transfer fees throughout the term of the contracts, the Blues were able to take advantage of a Financial Fair Play loophole, lowering their outgoing costs this season and staying inside FFP guidelines.

According to last year's financial statements, Chelsea spent barely under £100 million despite a number of high-profile additions like Raheem Sterling, Wesley Fofana, and Marc Cucurella.

Due to the loophole and the more than £200 million Chelsea earned through player sales this summer, the club was able to avoid breaking the financial regulations.

The Premier League is reportedly intending to put an end to that cunning strategy by imposing a five-year cap on transfer costs to be paid, regardless of the length of the contract, according to the Daily Mail. Recently, Uefa adopted a rule intended to curb excessive expenditure, and it is believed the Premier League would adopt it to comply with the European regulatory body.

Chelsea may continue recruiting new players without restrictions under the present law while the Premier League considers working to ratify the modifications.

Due to the club's 12th-place performance in the previous season, they are exempt from the new Uefa five-year rule for the 2023–24 season and will not be competing in Europe this year.

Mauricio Pochettino's Chelsea first squad has welcomed six new players this summer, while another four have either joined the junior system or have gone out on loan. The contracts for Axel Disasi and Christopher Nkunku expire in 2029, Robert Sanchez and Lesley Ugochukwu signed agreements that go through 2030, and Caicedo and Nicolas Jackson have agreements that run out in 2031.

In the last three transfer windows, Boehly has already spent £906.8 million on 27 new additions.

Romeo Lavia's £50 million transfer to Southampton could bring the total even closer to the $1 billion milestone, while Michael Olise from Crystal Palace might also join.
