JUST IN: A court ordered the confiscation of 14 assets connected to the Kogi government.
A court ordered the confiscation of 14 assets connected to the Kogi government.

On Wednesday, a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos State ordered the confiscation of 14 properties connected to the Kogi State government in Lagos, Abuja, and the United Arab Emirates.

As the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission filed an ex parte motion, Judge Nicholas Oweibo issued the interim order.

The world's tallest structure, Burj Khalifa, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, was one of the properties that EFCC counsel, Mr. Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, claimed was reasonably suspected to have been generated from illegal activity when he presented the ex parte motion to the court.

Judge Oweibo also gave the EFCC permission to seize N400 million, which was likewise found to be linked to the government and taken from one Aminu Falala.
Oyedepo said the court that the N400m was "planned to be utilized for the acquisition of Plot No. 1224 Bishop Oluwole Street, Victoria Island, Lagos" and that there was a "reasonable suspicion" that it had come from illegal activities.

The judge further instructed the EFCC to publicize the order within 14 days so that anyone with an interest can contest it and provide justification for why the forfeiture order should not be made permanent.
