Arsene Wenger criticizes Todd Boehly, saying "I'm worried."
Arsene Wenger criticizes Todd Boehly and requests that the next Chelsea manager include a specific clause in their contract.
After the Blues' 2-1 loss to Brighton on Saturday, interim manager Frank Lampard had already spoken to his "embarrassing" team when Boehly launched into an hour-long tirade against them. The situation was described as "weird" by one player, and former Arsenal manager Wenger has confessed that he would not have been pleased with his owner acting that way while he was in charge. The Frenchman even admitted that he always had a unique clause added to his Arsenal contracts to prevent similar circumstances, and he advised future Chelsea managers to follow suit. Wenger responded, "No, I wouldn't. That was always obvious in my mind. I wouldn't put up with Boehly's shenanigans while appearing as a pundit on beIN Sports.
"That is always in my contract.
"The advice I give to young coaches when they make contracts, I say make what is important for you, put that clearly in your contract that you are the only one.
"Nobody can buy a player without your agreement, nobody can interfere with the team, and you are solely responsible for managing the team.
"After that you stand in a different way because usually when a club wants you, you are in a strong position.
"Once you’ve lost three games and you want to put that in a contract it’s already more difficult."
When it was suggested that Boehly's message might be interpreted as motivational, Wenger, 73, was unimpressed.
"Well, again, the comeback," he said. I don't believe in these kinds of things because I don't want someone else doing my job if I'm being paid to lead and inspire the team.
"It has frequently happened that the president enters the locker room and speaks incoherently, but the team triumphs because they are a strong unit, leading him to believe that his poor communication was to blame.
"It's not always a result of what they said; most of the time, it's the caliber of the team," the speaker said.
After losing 2-0 to Real Madrid at Stamford Bridge last night, Chelsea was eliminated from the Champions League with an overall score of 4-0.
He returned to the locker room following the loss.
The Blues are now 11th in the Premier League and out of all cups.
Wenger's final statement on the areas under Boehly's ownership where things have gone wrong so far was, "I would say I'm scared for Chelsea.
"I concur that the new president makes significant investments.
"I prefer somebody invests £500m but over five years £100m, because you can really change the team.
"But if you don’t invest well the £500m, then you have a real problem for the future.
"They haven’t invested well, no. That is basically their problem today, they still have the same weaknesses they had before, they do not score enough goals, they have a lot of possession but not a lot of conversion of chances to score goals.
"We have another example tonight, they brought Joao Felix in December and in the most important game of their season [vs Real Madrid] they take him off because he doesn’t score goals as well.
"I believe as well when you sign players for eight years it’s good for the Financial Fair Play because you can amortise the transfer over eight years.
"But if the player is not right you have to pay the player for eight years, it’s a huge burden for the future, it’s a massive risk."
Chelsea have held talks with Luis Enrique and Julian Nagelsmann in their managerial hunt.
Tottenham could look to hijack their move for the former, however, with the Telegraph claiming that the North Londoners want to meet with the former Barcelona manager.
The Blues have also spoken to highly-rated Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim.
