In Rivers, police detain vandals of streetlights and recover stolen goods.
The Borikiri axis of Port Harcourt is home to a three-man group that specializes in vandalizing streetlights and stealing their components, according to the Rivers State Police Command.
The Niger Delta Development Commission, according to the police, gave the neighborhood with the lighting as a service. Grace Iringe-Koko, the command's spokeswoman, revealed this in a statement released on Wednesday in Port Harcourt.
Police Superintendent Iringe-Koko stated that the arrest was conducted after the agency received reliable information from various local leaders.
According to a portion of the statement, "Acting on information from Community leaders in Borokiri, Operatives from Borokiri Division detained three young males, namely: Belema Aggo, Michael Edet, and George Itarikabo, in the act of vandalizing street lights provided for the community by the NDDC.
"Suspects and exhibits, which include eight solar panels, eight heavy-duty batteries, and two street lights, retrieved, are in Police possession.The search for additional gang members and those who received previously stolen goods is still ongoing. Another development was the arrest of a suspected armed robber who had a revolver gun hidden in his car by Port Harcourt police's anti-cultism section during a regular stop and search near the Polo Club by GRA.
"The anti-cultism unit of the Command accosted a Mazda 323 with Reg. No. SKP 990 PM driven by one Covenant Okon, 26, suspected of being an armed robber," the statement added.
"One revolver weapon with one round of live ammunition was found on him during the search. While the investigation is ongoing, the suspect and the exhibits remain in police custody with the intention of locating and apprehending further group members.
The state police image maker urged people to help the police by giving them vital information if they notice any suspicious behavior or movement.
Iringe-Koko continued, "We, therefore, call citizens and inhabitants of the state to remain receptive, law-abiding, cautious, and prompt in reporting incidents of crime and criminality to the nearest police station.
