Obi criticizes demolitions and claims that the timing is wrong.

Obi voiced his concerns and urged the government to concentrate on easing economic challenges and putting policies in place to help people escape poverty in a message posted on his X account on Thursday. "I have followed the ongoing demolitions of properties across the country with complete despondency and unhappiness, especially knowing the extra hardship such acts have been heaping on hapless citizens who are already battling with multi-dimensional poverty," the writer wrote.

"Under the current severe economic conditions in the nation, a responsive government should be coming up with measures aimed at alleviating the people's hardships and implementing measures that will take more people out of poverty."Even if some of the governments' claims of infractions are true, the timing of this exercise is unfavorable given the current state of affairs and the impact it will have on the impoverished who are already finding it difficult to make ends meet.

"Those who are impoverished among us and are making the most of what little they have are suffering from extreme financial hardship that shouldn't be exacerbated. Some of the properties being razed are retirement homes and lifetime savings of the elderly and disabled.

Therefore, I'm making a request to the various governments involved in this act to take into account the difficulties facing the nation and make an effort to humanize their activities. Government must act with compassion in all its acts, even as we should enforce reasonable regulations. -PO
